About Amy

I’m not sure who I am at this point in my life.  Somehow, being a mom has become my principal identity, which I never expected to happen.  I’m also an Objectivist, I’m an organization/efficiency-freak, and I’m a “scanner,” which I’ll explain in a moment. 

I used to be a software developer but got bored with it, so I went back to school.  I got a B.S. in something called Applied Engineering Sciences which is not quite an engineering degree and not quite a business degree.  I did love the program but it didn’t help me determine a clear career path.  In the meantime, my husband and I had our daughter, Samantha, and now I can’t bear the thought of going to work full time.  We’ve lived in four different places in the two years since she was born, so there hasn’t been enough time for me to do much other than be a mom and a mover.

Recently, however, I read I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What it Was, by Barbara Sher.  I figured out that I am what she calls a “scanner.” I like to learn a little bit about a lot of things.  Once I accepted this and combined it with the fact that I love to write, I realized that freelance writing could be a great career for me.  Most freelancers succeed by becoming an expert in a particular subject.  I intend to find a niche that allows me to write on a variety of subjects.  I think my views as an Objectivist will help with that goal.  I’m not sure exactly how it will come together, but I’m confident that I’ll figure it out if I keep writing.  Being a freelancer is also like running a small business and I love that I’ll get to use my organizational skills in that way.  Finally, writing can be a part-time job, which will allow me to homeschool my daughter, something that I would love to do if I can make it work financially. 

I started this blog to flex my writer’s muscles and I’m loving it.  I hope that in a couple of years I’ll be able to update this “About Amy” page and be able to say:  “I am a mom, a homeschooler, and a writer.”
