Sounds like you're making great use of your various techniques, Amy. None works every time as a cure-all, but taken together and used creatively, they make a difference in your daily interactions. ...Isn't it interesting how the 2-year-old phase is thought of as the difficult, defiant time? And yet all that is is the beginning of what you're describing now: a child's start at autonomy and communicating her will to those around her. ...I totally agree that giving them those extra 3 seconds makes a HUGE difference. Little ones truly do march to a slower tempo.

Why does it sound like you're talking about our son?

These are the same struggles we have at our house. We have tried to implement some of the same strategies and find it hard to do so consistently. Our son has been particularly trying lately. Now he's into the ignoring us. We'll say or ask him something and he'll just keep on his merry way as if we have said nothing. Its driving us crazy.
